PvP

I've been PvP'ing a little lately. Now that the new system is in place, I feel more motivated. It'd be odd hours for you, but if anyone is up, join me.

If you manage to get in

So it looks like they are using google mail to intergrate w/ blogger?

So if you manage to get though the 2 step process, basicly remebering which password you use, selecting yes you accept some silly user agreement then clicking okay after that then waiting.... well your here. Most of you don't post anywho but I wanted to give you guys a heads up that This orc hunter is going to start hunting for a new weapon off of some dude in Uldaman. If your 40 toon is willing, those bad boys drop mad exp running back entrance ULDA runs. Also I may tame a bat.

Items of interest.

Reunion

We're going to have a little get-together at the Rolando homestead on the 29th. Guest of honor will be the venerable Gavin, who will regale us with tales of mirth and merriment between rounds of UT2K4, HL2DM, WC3, and whatever else people want to play. I'll post more details as we make more arbitrary decisions.

All regular readers of this blog are invited, though it'd be mighty white if you could let me know ahead of time if you can make it.

We get to fight a arena team in BRD's ring of law. it's more of a pvp encounter than a tank and spank one so we'll use crowd controll and fear, should be fun!

ST run

Joe and I have a quest in there and would like to run it.
Wendyfoo(rouge 53)
Wolfsong(hunter 60)

Scott mentioned intrest if we didn't start late and stay up late. Lets say 7ish, to 9:30ish if we do it durring the week. Ofcourse there is always friday or the weekend.

We need to kill the green Drakes, so no need to run the whole instance. If I can I will make raptor PUNCH and moose turd PIE.

This also hinges on if I can make it if I can get Wendyfoo out of wpl. Wow is crashing on me every time i try to load her.

News on Burning Crusade

Blizzard just released a ton of new information through a bunch of news websites, go to blizzard's main site to see where. In short, the expansion will make WoW everything I ever wanted it to be. If all of us get it, we can have a ton of fun together, and best of all we don't have to have all this Top of fabled monkey buisness, we'll have enough people to make our own raiding guild that will be able to handle most of the dungeons in the game!

Here's a summary of the things they said:
-All new dungeons will be 5-man, 10 man or 25 man at the very most. You will be able to do lower dungeons that you liked again at level 70, just select the hard difficulty and those bosses for level 63 dungeons will suddenly become a challenge for a 70 player, and drop level 70 loot!
-There will be caputurable cities and other cool world pvp junk, and honor will be like a currency, instead of grinding forever to get to a rank, there is no honor decay and you spend honor like money to get PvP items that are guaranteed to be as good as the top gear form dungeons.
-There will also be an arena sysetm, kinda like battle net is now, you make a team for 2vs2, 3vs3 or 5vs5, pick a team name and colors, then compeate with an intellegent match making system that pits your team against others even of the same faction in your cross server battlegroups. The match making will take into account gear, group makeup, and skill of opponents when making matchups.
There is more in those articles, but those are some of the biggies.

MD/Ruin or How Alk became über without becoming a fire mage

Notable talents: Master Demonologist, Devastation and Ruin.

The advantages of this build are the increased power and utility of your pets -- since such talents as Fel Intellect, Fel Stamina and Unholy Power improve every pet, while Improved Imp/Voidwalker/Succubus improve specific ones -- and great flexibility, as Master Demonologist and Demonic Sacrifice give a wide range of benefits to select from based on the situation. The radical change in specialization can be almost like respending your talent points, and all it costs is a Soul Shard. Also, Demonic Embrace gives you a large stamina boost.

The threat reduction of the imp stacks with the threat reduction of Salvation or Tranquil Air Totems. This combined with Improved Shadowbolt, Bane and Ruin makes for a tankfriendly warlock with high DPS.

Vent, Part 2

Maraco, Calhoun, Alk, Tsuno, Thumbs, and I all tested the Vent server this afternoon. It appears to be working great. For connection information, check out the "Guild Information" button on the guild page in-game. This is running off of my Win2k3 server, and is intended to be available 24/7 so have at it!

Vent

So yah. I've set up a vent server. I've tested it using some tools at the Ventrillo website, but it has yet to be tested with real clients from the outside. The free version has an 8 connection limit, but that should be enough for us don't you think? I'll share the information once I've had a chance to test it a bit more. In the meantime, y'all should install the vent client.

Operation Bushisums..

Okay, If I recall we were discussing the name of the "war" over "there"....

There where two names that come to mind.

Operation Enduring Freedom
which became (i think)
Operation Dessert Freedom.

Any who, I'm gonna go w/ FLAMMIN' on that first one. Second one... We should count how many sand granules that we have freed from terrorism.

Gaming Saturday? My place? 6ish?

Try #2, this time with advance notice. Todd has been on a winning streak in WC3, and I cannot overcome his hax on my own. Who will stand with me against his tyranny?

So Now That I'm Rockin' & Rollin'...

I'm just dying to run something! I'd really like to take a stab at another DM Tribute run (Rod of the Ogre Magi drops there), but no matter what it is we need one tank and one strong healer to commit first. So I'm going to calendar something, and you folks are going to look at it and sign up. RIGHT?!?

;-)

Fiber! w00t!

It's in! Check out my post over at my main blog.

UBRS Key

Joe asked about getting the UBRS key. It's not very complex, it just takes multiple chance drops. There are three bosses in LBRS that have a chance of dropping their respective gem. Killing the boss does not guarantee he'll drop it. There's also a metal ring portion that's a random drop off the mobs. Get all three gems and the ring, then take the four parts to (I think) somewhere in Dustwallow Marsh to have them forged together and WHALA! One key (ring) to UBRS. Maraco has it. I have 3 of the 4 parts required on Big Tat, and wouldn't you know my luck? The one piece that's usually easiest to get is the one I don't have and that continually eludes me. Se la vie.

the internet is a towel

I know some of us heard this. I'm just posting for extra credit.

ZOMGWTFZORZ

In the expansion there will be blood elf Paladins and Draeni shaman!!! What the heck happend to faction individuality! Sure I'd love to have their blessings in a raid, but I don't want those filthy bubble hearhters fighting by my side! (Or rolling on my plate drops *wink*) They even said they weren't planning on doing this when a rumor came out earlier, guess they were trying to keep us in the dark.
Oh and btw who's going to be on on Saturday?

Finally, it all makes sense...

Aggro part 2 of 0

Blatent disregard for someone else's work.
Following below is a more up to date overview of aggro.
(there are a few things that are wrong but they ahve to do w/ multipul threat reduction not being additive but multiplied)

§1§ Definitions: Threat vs Aggro, Threat Scale

We define "aggro" to be who the mob is attacking. A player has aggro, or pulls aggro, when the mob is attacking them. We define "threat" to be a numeric value that each mob has towards each player. Note that the target who has aggro is not necessarily the player with the highest threat.

To set a scale for threat, let 1 point of damage from a normal attack cause 1 point of threat, where the sense of normal will be clarified later. The threat values of some abilities are listed in the MPQs, and this 1:1 scale matches those abilities (e.g. feint, distracting shot, fade).

§2§ The Threat List

Imagine every mob as keeping a list of players and their threat values. If the mob is unaware of a player, that player will not be on the threat list. As soon as the mob becomes aware of a player, in the ways described below, they are put on the list with 0 threat. Knowing which players are on a mobs threat list and which mobs have a certain player on their threat lists is crucial in predicting a mobs behaviour.

A player can get on a mobs threat list in the following ways:

1) Body Pulling, i.e. getting close enough to a mob that is out of combat.
2) Body Pulling linked mobs. When you body pull a mob, youll also get onto the threat lists of all mobs that are linked to it. Note that after the pull they become unlinked; a second person attacking one of the mobs will only get on that mobs threat list after the pull.
3) Buffing a player that is on the mobs threat list. That is, casting a healing spell or other buff spell.
4) Direct damage or casting a debuff on the mob. Some debuffs, notably mind vision and hunters mark, wont put you on the mobs threat list.
5) Bosses in-combat pulse. For most high level instance bosses, every tick (2 seconds) every player in the instance is added to the boss threat list when the boss is in combat.
6) In combat proximity. Many mobs with secondary targeting or AOE abilities will add nearby players to their threat lists. For other mobs, as long as they are in combat you can stand on top of them and not get added to their threat list.

§3§ Aggro Transfer, Threat Decay

To prevent mobs rapidly swapping targets when many players have similar threat, a mob will stay on its current target unless another player has significantly higher threat. Suppose a mob has aggro on a certain player X. Then to pull aggro while in melee range, another player needs 110% of Xs threat. If the other player is outside melee range, they need 130% of Xs threat to pull aggro. This means than in general, once you have aggro it is easy to keep it, and once you lose aggro it is hard to regain it. It also stops two players attacking a mob from range and constantly swapping aggro between them, because as their threat increases, the 30% margin will be harder and harder to overcome.

Note that the 10% effect is determined only by your range, not the ability used. If you are generating threat from healing or a range ability such as Frostbolt, you will still pull aggro at 110% if you are within melee range of the mob.

In the normal course of events, threat does not decay. Once you are on a mobs threat list, youre there until its dead or you are, and your threat does not decay over time. There are of course mobs with specific abilities that reduce threat, and player abilities also, which do decrease your threat.

§4§ AOE Threat: Healing, Buffing, Power Gain

Each point of healing causes 0.5 threat, forgetting threat modifiers. Overhealing doesnt cause threat. Most buff spells cast on friendly players generate a small amount of threat. Gaining Power (Mana / Energy / Rage) also causes threat in most cases, for example taking a healing potion, or gaining rage from Bloodrage, or Energy from Thistle Tea. Certain spells are exempt, for example mana from Blessing of Salvation or a Mana Spring totem doesnt cause threat, and there is no threat from the healing gained from Siphon Life. For normal abilities, each point of Mana is 0.5 threat, Rage is 5 threat, and Energy is unknown, probably 5. In the scheme of things, threat from power gain is usually irrelevant, unless you have consistent or burst values, such as taking a mana potion or having Fel Energy running.

These forms of buffs all have infinite range; they will cause threat to all mobs on whose threat list you are on. Furthermore, the threat caused is split equally among all the affected mobs. If you are on one mobs threat list, a 1000 point heal will cause 500 threat to that mob. If 5 mobs are aware of you, the same heal will cause 100 threat on each mob.

§5§ Threat Modifiers: Common Modifiers, Multiplicative vs Additive

Here are some of the more common threat modifiers and their values:

Warrior in Defensive Stance / Druid in Bear Stance: +30%
Warriors 5/5 Defiance / Druidss 5/5 Feral Instinct: +15% (in above stances only)
Warrior in Battle or Berserker Stance: -20%
Rogue (passive, always on): -20%
Blessing of Salvation: -30%
Tranquil Air Totem: -20%
Priests 5/5 Silent Resolve: -20% (spells)
Mages 3/3 Frost Channelling: -30% (frost spells)
Mages 2/2 Arcane Subtlety: -40% (arcane spells)

It is important to understand how two modifiers interact. Some modifiers are multiplicative, e.g. -20% is really multiplying by 0.8. Two such modifiers multiply, so the net result is 0.8 * 0.8 = 0.64. Other modifiers are additive: then start from 100% and add all the active modifiers. All the modifiers listed above are additive, so that for example Arcane Subtlety + Blessing of Salvation = 100% - 40% - 30% = 30% of normal threat, or a Warrior with Defiance in Defensive stance has 100% + 30% + 15% = 145% of normal threat generation.

Examples of multiplicative modifiers are Shamans Healing Grace talent (0.85 multiplier at max rank) or Druids Subtlety Talent (0.8 multiplier), or Priests Shadow Affinity (0.75 multiplier). In a sense, additive modifiers for threat reduction are more powerful, since they combine to small values. For example, two -20% additive effects combine to -40%, or 60% of the original threat, which is noticeably less than 64% if they were multiplicative talents. This effect is more extreme when more effects are combined. Suppose you have 8/8 Arcanist (-15% threat), Blessing of Salvation (-30%), and Arcane Subtlety (-40%) while using an arcane spell. Since the Arcanist bonus is also additive, your total threat generative is a mere 15% of normal.

§6§ Class Abilities and Talents in Detail

(A) Warrior

Most warrior abilities add a fixed amount of threat when they land successfully. The following table gives the raw values, i.e. before the modifiers from battle stance or defensive stance, and ignores the damage done by the abilities.

Sunder Armor............260
Heroic Strike 8.........145
Heroic Strike 9 (AQ)....175
Revenge 5...............315
Revenge 6 (AQ)..........355
Shield Bash.............180
Shield Slam (1.11)......250
Thunder Clap............130
Demoralizing Shout.......43
Battle Shout.............55

Battle Shout generates 55 threat for each player that is buffed; up to 5 people in your party and their pets, as long as they are on the relevant mob's threat list. For example if you buff a player that is out of combat, no threat is generated. Therefore in a tightly packed group, Battle Shout can rival Sunder Armor for threat, but as a buff the threat is split amongst all the mobs that are aware of you. On the other hand, Demoralizing Shout gives 43 threat to each affected mob. As long as there are 6 or more mobs affected, it will hold aggro as well or better than Sunder Armor.

The behaviour of Taunt is more complicated. It has three effects. Firstly, it applies the taunt debuff to the mob, which forces it to attack you for three seconds. Secondly, it gives you as much threat as the mobs current aggro target, permanently. If you were the target, there is no change, and if you had more threat than the target (that is, if you had more than 100% but less than 110% of their threat), you wont actually lose threat from it. However, this effect can give you arbitrarily high amounts of threat. Lastly, if you came on the threat list before the mobs old target, you will also get aggro on the mob.

The last effect is significant and needs explaining. For a normal taunt you will get threat but not aggro, so if you do nothing else, after three seconds the mob will return to the old target. But if you came onto the mobs threat list before the current target, e.g. you pulled the mob, or attacked it first, then you will gain aggro with just that taunt.

This can be used to your advantage on tauntable bosses that require a tank rotation. If the tanks taunt the boss in the reverse order that they came onto his threat list, then all but one of the taunts will be easy, giving aggro to the new tank, while only the last warrior in the cycle will need to get the additional 10% threat to gain aggro.

While Challenging Shout and Mocking Blow have a similar forced attack debuff to Taunt, they do not give the caster threat in the same way as Taunt, just fixed amounts.

(B) Druid (credit to Chibi of Shadow Moon)

The threat modifiers for Bear tanks are the same as Warriors: 130% for Bear Form and Defensive Stance, or 145% if you have 5/5 Defiance or Feral Instinct. However, the primary bear tanking abilities dont add threat, they multiply. Each point of damage done by Maul and Swipe does an additional 0.75 threat, before the bear stance modifier. E.g. Maul does 200 damage, so it does 200 * 1.75 = 350 threat raw, or 350 * 1.45 = 507.5 threat counting the bear stance + feral instinct modifiers.

In Cat Form, there is no -20% passive threat modifier that Rogues or Warriors in Battle or Defensive Stance have.
The Subtlety Talent is multiplicative, for 0.8 at max rank.
Growl has exactly the same behaviour as Taunt for Warriors.

(C) Rogue

Rogues have a passive -20% additive threat modifier. This means that with blessing of Salvation you are at 50% normal threat, so this buff allows you to do 60% more damage than without it (0.8 / 0.5 = 1.6).

Feint does -600 threat, or -800 threat with rank 5, from the AQ book. Note that it is affected by your threat modifiers, so that the rank 5 ability reduces only 800 * 0.8 = 640 threat by default, or 800 * 0.5 = 400 threat with blessing of salvation. However, in every case it reduces the threat of 800 points of damage. Note that you cant feint below 0 threat.

Vanish removes you from all mobs threat lists, but if you are fighting a boss you will get back on due to the in-combat pulse every tick. However, if you are the last person alive, a vanish will cause the boss to go out of combat, so youll survive if you can achieve that feat.

(D) Paladin

Paladins receive 50% threat from healing compared to other healers. This is designed to stop them tanking instances by healing everything in sight. As a side affect, this gives them a decent advantage over other healers where healing threat is an issue.

When the Righteous Fury buff is active, Holy damage causes 1.6 threat, or 1.9 threat if you have 3/3 Improved Righteous Fury.
Holy Shield damage gives another 1.2 multiplier, for 1.9 * 1.2 = 2.28 threat per damage with talented Righteous Fury.

(E) Priest

The Silent Resolve talent gives -20% threat to spells, additively. Shadow Affinity multiplies threat from shadow spells by 0.75. For example, with Silent Resolve and Shadow Affinity and Blessing of Wisdom, your threat from shadow spells is (100% - 20% - 30%) * 0.75 = 37.5% of normal.

Mind Blast generates 2 threat per damage, all ranks.

Fade reduces your threat temporarily by a fixed amount - 820 at max rank, and is not affected by threat modifiers, such as Silent Resolve. This is a good thing since a priest would only have negative threat modifiers on. When the buff ends, you get the same threat back, so there is no net gain from spamming Fade you should leave it as a panic button instead. Note that you cant fade to below 0 threat.

(F) Warlock

The healing from Life Tap, Siphon Life, and Drain Life doesnt cause threat, but the application of the Siphon Life debuff causes a small amount of threat, and the damage from Drain Life counts. Most curses cause non-zero threat.

Searing pain is 2 threat per damage, all ranks.

Fel Stamina and Fel Energy do generate threat.

(G) Shaman

The talent Healing Grace is a multiplier, 0.85 at max level, which would give you 68% threat from heals with a Tranquil Air totem.

Earth Shock is 2 threat per damage, all ranks.

Each rank of Rockbiter Weapon triggers a weapon proc that is designed to give a fixed threat per second. At max rank, Rockbiter gives 72 threat per second on successful hits. If you had a 3.0 speed weapon, each successful hit (not a miss, dodge or parry) would add 3 * 72 = 216 threat.

(H) Mage

The mage talents Frost Channeling, Burning Soul and Arcane Subtlety, for 30%, 30%, 40% threat reduction to Frost, Fire and Arcane spells respectively, all stack additively with buffs such as Tranquil Air Totem, Blessing of Salvation, and the Arcanist 8/8 set bonus. This means that once you have the Frost Channeling talent, adding Blessing of Salvation allows a 75% increase in damage to reach the same threat. (70% / 40% = 1.75)

(I) Hunter

Feign Death is a complete threat wipe, as long as it isnt resisted.
Distracting shot is a flat 600 threat at max rank.

§7§ And One Other Thing...

Crits dont give you any extra threat just for being crits.

Overwriting a buff doesnt affect the threat caused. E.g. Sunder Armor causes as much threat when there are 5 debuffs as none, and player buffs cause just as much threat if the player already had one up.

Strat-alicious

Looks like thumbreaker has a lot of reasons to go back.

I'm working on getting the rest of my Valor set (I still need the gloves, shoulders, and legs) and have started on the upgrade guests to the Heroism set (which means i have already turned in my dungeon 1 bracer and have the dungeon 2 bracer). I'm up to the part where I need Goblin rocket fuel to make the Ectoplasm work. In short, I'll need the valor gloves off ramstein (also legs off Rivendare). Unless Hidoi got a better shield the crest of retribution also drops off ramstein.

Eventually, I'll have to do the 45 min baron quest so I'll need practice anyway. I also would like to duel weild Timmy. Double the cursing, double the fun! So, anyone need or want to run strat? There's also AD rep stuff like bug parts and bones.

If you act now, you'll also receive Holy Water! Hurry, operators are standing by!

I don't have a time or day in mind. How's the fabled's/drunken monkey's schedules this week?

This isn't funny...

... its sad (and true).

Scholo tonight - 6:30

Just a reminder. Who's in?

Ding (for Windsong). Need advice on shaman builds.

so, Windsong is finally 60. She smashed her last ogre for xp in Burning Steeps and is looking forward to running cash quests.

Windsong's play style is more melee than healing. She's not too fond of dungeon quests (even more so now because she's usually feeding Ethan with the other hand).

She's been trying to decide how to spend her talent points since the talent tree reset. I don't have any advice except for "monster, smashy, goood~~". Seem Windsong would enjoy the PVE build from Wowwiki. Any shammy's out there want to share their build, or at least share what they think is a good build?

ToC Event Calendar

I've set up a ToC event calendar, and have sent an invitation to everyone in ToC who I know has a gmail account. You don't have a gmail account, you say?

erm...

I don't understand. You don't have what now? Seriously, get with the 00's people.

Anyway, a significant number of us do have gmail accounts, and I strongly encourage you folks to look at the calendar. I think it will really impress you. Everyone who gets an invite also gets the right to manage events, and discussions can be posted in the event details to allow for planning, etc. For example, please have a look at the item I created for (I think) server time Fri. evening. I also put up what I think are The Fabled's recurring activities, just so everyone knows when some folks have other obligations. I know Ivers is in another guild, maybe he could put up the days when he's busy with them. Since I'm trying to do this from a different time zone, it's not always easy for me to see when I've made a mistake, so if you find one please correct it. (Is 10:30am the following day for me really 6:30pm the previous day for you?)

Independance day?

So I'm assuming we all have the 4th off, I got plans for most the day but have some room for maybe one 5 man upper level instance. I'd love to do one with you ToC guys, and wanted to see if anyone else has some time and when. I'm afraid to do it with anyone else right now as I had a bad experience with a group of 4 people from prophesy on Saturday, we were doing UD strath, which we all know can be done in 45 minutes if you must, but it took these guys 4 hours! and when we finally got to the baron we wiped again and they all left becasue their guild was starting a raid. It was pretty annoying; and also their shaman took the crest of retribution I needed badly. http://www.thotbott.com/?i=23345 I'm not really pissed at the guys, just upset that so much time was wasted. Sorry, I had to vent a little. I feel better now.

Migration-ho!

So our good ol' server is finally being migrated to the new site with fresh gear, sweet! This is good becasue those ques were starting to show up again. It gives the info on the login page, or for those who can't get to that you can click the link above. I propose that we celebrate the new server's ability to handle strain by putting it to the test: A phycodelic drug induced dance party! We'll all meet on the top of Orgrimmar, throw down some totems, cast a few buffs, then consume deviate fish and noggenflogger elixers at the same time. We're talking hardcore here. AFGame

I'll be away from the action due to the fact that I'm pet/house sitting for Brooke.

She is in SF this week w/ here mom. They are staying in the city to spend time w/ Rich, her Step-Father. He had a liver transplant on saterday-sunday.

The sergury took 11 hours from 11pm sat, night to 10am sunday morning. He received a new (well used) liver and they threw in a 3rd kidney due to the fact that his other two had been overworked as of late and they where afraid they might loose 1 or 2. Putting him on dialisys.

Surgery looks to have gone well. He is recovering, although very loopy and perinoid about the drugs they are feeding him.

I'll probably be in antioch till wed or thursday.

Would you like to take a survey?

So memorial day is not far off, and I'd like to see if somethign is possible. The LAN party we had a few weeks ago went pretty well, and I thought it would be great fun to have a repeat this upcoming holiday. So I've got a few questions to see if it would work out:
Todd and Scott, would we be able to use your place again?
Everyone else: Would you be able to make it? Does Monday 5/29 work out?
And finally, would you guys like to start it off by first going to see X-Men 3? What do you guys think, is it possible?

Go, Cal, Go

Alas, victory is fleeting, and you can't get DSL in Mogadishu. Promises of liberation and prosperity soon give way to the realities of Somali inter-tribal warfare, and you find yourself caught amidst a bloody civil war; ironically, you provided most of the weapons fielded by your enemies. You narrowly escape an assassination attempt by a mercenary team (hired by the CIA, who suspects you of supplying arms to terrorists), and are forced to flee across the Saudi Arabian peninsula on a horse with no name...

Calling all master alchemists...

So now I've got all the mats for Titanic leggings (link above) and the two flasks of titans it requires. It looks like the flask of titans recipe is hard to get and it requires the Alchemy lab in Scholomance or BWL to make. I'm in no hurry as I need 2 levels or so before I can wear the pants, but if you guys can help me find someone trustworthy I can give the mats to and have them make the 2 flasks, that would be great. If you can find a blacksmith that makes Titanic leggings in your guilds also, that would be sweet. Right now the lowest combine fee I've been offered is 50g, so anything cheaper would be cool. Thanks.

I'm bored.

I'm bored, let's talk about something. How about the X-men move? I'm pretty excited about it and glad it's coming out this month. How about you? I think Hugh Jackman has the whole wolverine thing nailed, I just love that guy, weather he's acting like his classy, brittish, broadway self in movies like Kate and Leopold, or kicking butt as wolverine. Kelsy grammer was a good pick for beast's voice, but I think he looks a little funny in all the makeup for beast, but noting how I'm complaining about a charcter called BEAST, I should probably just be quiet about that one. Seeing more of colossus will be way cool, he was always one of my favorites. I'm pretty sure this will be the last of the x-men movies, the 2000's will be fondly rememberd by the nerd culture as the decade we finally got our movies done right. I hope this trend doesn't decline. Anyway, let's talk about this, or anything else; I'm bored.

Can you tell me how to get...

So I'm at the level where I can enter Alterac Valley, and they have the best awards so I'm going to try to focus on that one, but I also remember it as being the most complicated one. If I remember right there are special little quests for the lower level people like me to do like go gold hunting and so forth, but I don't want to run in there compleatly clueless. Can any of you either point me to a website with a good guide or tell me the basics of this place, especially where I can find stuff? Thx.

Top of Quality

The Fabled acquired the preliminary quest item for this after downing Ragnaros last night. The materials required are not trivial, including 20 dark iron bars, 50 arcanite bars, and heaps of Molten Core drops. Thanks to the spontaneous generosity of many guild members (thanks Jekyll!) Direwolf was able to wield this weapon just a few hours later.

Arbitrage

I know there are some here that buy stuff from the Alliance side and then transfer it to the Horde side. I assume you do this, not because you saw that Purple BoE in Ironforge and thought that would be perfect on your Troll Hunter, but because of price differentials and a profit motive.

Gavin, has a post on exchange rates in Japan, I've spent the last hour talking to myself about purchase power parity. Go there to talk about Japanesy things.

My question to you all is, do you see big price differences between Horde and Alliance? How do you track prices? What price difference does there have to be for you to bother moving stuff between sides? Is there only transportation costs, as I suggest in my comments at Gavin's blog, or is there something else to consider before moving items between factions?

exodus

So.. our merry little server has come up on the realm transfer list. Character transfers will be opening up on the 10th for a new server called Black Dragonflight. The move is supposed to alleviate some of the pressure on our server, maybe whittle down the queues and the lag a bit.

Blizzard has thrown in a twist, though. Black Dragonflight is a PvP server. This means that you are automatically PvP flagged in contested zones (just about every zone over level 20). I hear that STV is pretty much an ongoing battle royale on those servers.

I'm split on the prospect of switching to a PvP server. It will certainly make the game a lot more interesting. The Fabled will probably be putting it to a vote really soon, and I'm inclined to stick with them. What do you folks think?

Just so you guys know Dexterfoo and I always try to have a night we are both on for a good amount of time so we can do instances and stuff, We want to do them with Wendyfoo too, but, well, we allways just assume Todd will be on. Anyway it's been Wendsdays but I thought I'd just let you guys know we changed it to Tuesdays. So if you want to do high 40's or low 50's stuff we'll be on Tuesdays, and I hope to do ZF, Sunken Temple, and Maradon within a month or so if I can manage it, so hopefully we'll be able to do one each week. Anyway wheather you have other things or not, I'll be seeing ya Tuesdays.

Hah! episode 2

Patch 1.11 notes:

...

Rogue

* Moving while stealthed has a very small chance to break stealth. This was to reduce the frequency at which players were being ambushed or backstabbed in player vs. player environments.
* Discovering a stealthed rogue will now produce a large alert symbol above the rogue’s head similar to the Hunter’s Mark. The alert can only be dispelled by using the Vanish ability.
* Vanish has been increased to a 30 minute cooldown.
* Fixed bug which allowed Rogues to wield two weapons at the same time.
...
Warlocks

* Standard bags will no longer hold soul shards. This should make obtaining larger size soul shard bags feel more rewarding. To compensate for the change at lower levels, we've added new soul shard bags to various vendors throughout Azeroth. These bags are designed to hold between 4 and 12 soul shards, depending upon the size.
* Using friendly emotes will now significantly increase the Infernal and Doomguard's chance to remain loyal to the Warlock.
* Friendly emotes are no longer available to the Warlock.
...
World Environment

* Due to the awkward look and feel of Taurens in the Undercity, guards will no longer permit their entry and have been flagged to kill on sight. Taurens, you've been warned.
* Entering the Barrens will now flag your character for PvP, regardless of your faction or realm type. This is being done to make the zone feel more alive.
* Above the corpse of Mankirk's wife, a large red arrow will now appear and be viewable for up to 500 yards. To ensure that the associated quest offers some challenge, typing the word 'Mankirk' 'wife' or 'anyone seen' in Barrens chat will now result in experience loss.
* In order to assist with various upkeep costs, at a designated time NPC vendors will now give players an amount of gold based upon their level. This is currently slated to occur every Tuesday from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM PST.
* Many new Sons’ of Arugal have been added to Silverpine Forrest. Occasionally Arugal himself wanders the zone. During this time, players may not enter his keep.
* Due to the changes associated with the new flightpath scenery improvements, players will need to relearn all flightpaths.
* A total of 26 new flightpaths have been added to various points throughout the Barrens.
* Additional grass areas have been added to the enemy faction's zones. This grass is exceptionally green.

stolen: "Why Ranged Atk Power > Crit% (Hunter's only)"

I'm ripping off Bondok, an officer of the fabled and he is ripping off someone else.

At one point in the game I was solely convinced that +crit% was the damage factor for Hunter's (PvE of course). Over and over I've played with my talents and weapons even when I was in all blue. Last year right when I joined the Fabled I met a Hunter by the name of Khrash. (vox immortalis). Even before Khrash gained a lot of his Epics this dude did a fuck ton of damage, overtime and consistantly.

In my talks with him he has convinced me, in recent days within the Fabled, and since I've changed my build to my roll as a Puller and a High DPS output Hunter.

As a favor he wrote up his thoughts and why Hunter's are #1 in DPS hands down in PvE. And why Ranged Attack Power (agility, atk power bonuses) is greater then Crit bonuses on weapons.

Hunter's this is not a you should do this Post, but to be the best in our roll as DPS and mass damage overtime, this Post is a good read. Also when we start talks about ATK Power,Agil and +bonuses on weapons that we should be allowed to bid on. This post should be the firepower we need to convince others what our roll is and how to do it well with the right equipment.

Khrash wrote:
The Hunters primary attribute is Ranged Attack Power and +Hit.

+Crit is always nice to have, but certainly nothing you would want to keep if you can dramatically increase your RAP by losing it.

You will hear arguements from other hunters such as "But 1% crit is equal to 52.6 Agility!" but its NOT. Yes, in the sense that 52.6 agility does equal 1% crit in turn it does not equal 105.2 Ranged Attack Power.

14 RAP = 1 DPS
105.2 RAP = 7.5 DPS

This far outweighs +Crit.

Your average hit is increased the higher your Ranged Attack Power goes. Your sweet spot, and what should be sought after, is 1300 RAP minimum. To go along with this you should seek +9 HIT, but again, do not give up RAP to obtain +Hit.

RAP > HIT > CRIT.

Look at it that way.

As to what bow/gun/xbow to use. This can be argued, but let me put this on the table. What you see for "DPS" for the weapon does NOT apply to a Hunter. You must look at minimum and maximum damage and compare this to the Speed of the weapon.

You are looking for high low damage, high high damage and slow speed.

Example:

Crossbow of Imminent Doom
Binds when picked up
Range Crossbow
103 - 155 Damage Speed 3.10
(41.6 damage per second)
+7 Agility
+5 Stamina
+5 Strength
Requires Level 60
Passive: Improves your chance to hit by 1%.

Dropped by: Ossirian the Unscarred 5.65%

The above Xbow is the second best droppable ranged weapon in the game for a Hunter. This comes from the AQ20 instance off the final boss. Its drop rate is fair and not overly rare. Note the low damage versus the high damage. This xbow is SICK. With 1300+ RAP and +6 HIT your average Multi-shot and Aimed Shot will be incredible.

Also keep in mind that in most instances a good Hunters 'white damage' is only 43% of his/her total damage. The other 57% come from Aimed Shot/Multi-Shot/Arcane Shot/Serpent Sting.

Your choice of Ranged is extremely important, but you must choose based on your build and what you feel is important.

For myself I am a Marksman Build 100%. 5/34/12. This build is optimal Marksman Build.

I prefer RAP over everything and I choose to obtain through Agility/+Attack Power Items.

I prefer slow speed ranged, high low damage, high high damage ranged.

As to melee weapons. Yes, people will bitch moan and complain about our choices, but they must see them from our perspective. Hunters generally do not care about DPS on melee weapons as our melee is both weak and simply ineffective. We look at the stats of the weapon.

Does it have +agility?
Does it have +hit?
Does it have +crit?
Does it have +attack power?

If an item has these stats on them we look quite favorably on them and depending on how much of each it has will apply how much weight we give to them as we wish to max out our RAP.

Keep in mind that Hunters obtain 2:1 Agility ratio on RAP. Agility is incredibly important to a Hunter.

If a Weapon has 2 or more of the above stats on them we generally wish to obtain that item as it will help us in our goal of maxing our RAP.

The best Combo of weapons for a Hunter who is a RAP Whore is the following:

MAIN HAND:
Fang of the Faceless
Binds when picked up
Unique
One-Hand Dagger
66 - 123 Damage Speed 1.90
(49.7 damage per second)
Requires Level 60
Passive: Improves your chance to get a critical strike by 1%.
Passive: +28 Attack Power.

OFF HAND:
Warblade of the Hakkari
Binds when picked up
Unique
Off Hand Sword
57 - 106 Damage Speed 1.70
(47.9 damage per second)
Requires Level 60
Passive: +40 Attack Power.
"The seething flames of hatred."

The Twin Blades of Hakkari

OMG! Hear the Rogues cry! Now listen to me for a second. Yes, I understand that obtain a great benefit from these 2 weapons or at least one of them, but Hunters also obtain a great benefit from them.

Hunters obtain, with +15 Agility Enchants, 128 Ranged Attack Power and 1% Crit.

This combo of weapons is by FAR the best weapon combo a Hunter can obtain bar none (besides perhaps some insane BWL weapons which I have not researched as it is out my reach at this time).

Another great combo is:

MAIN HAND:
Brutality Blade
Binds when picked up
Unique
One-Hand Sword
90 - 168 Damage Speed 2.50
(51.6 damage per second)
+9 Strength
+9 Agility
Requires Level 60
Passive: Improves your chance to get a critical strike by 1%.

OFFHAND:
Core Hound Tooth
Binds when picked up
Unique
One-Hand Dagger
57 - 107 Damage Speed 1.60
(51.2 damage per second)
+9 Stamina
Requires Level 60
Passive: Improves your chance to get a critical strike by 1%.
Passive: +20 Attack Power.

With this combo we obtain, with +15 Agility Enchants, 98 RAP and 2% Crit. This also is an insane combo of weapons for Hunters.

Obviously there are other combo's out there, but I am pointing out 2 which stand out in my mind.

Personally I use, for now, the Dal'Rend's Set.

MAIN HAND:
Dal'Rend's Sacred Charge
Binds when picked up
Main Hand Sword
81 - 151 Damage Speed 2.80
(41.4 damage per second)
+4 Strength
Requires Level 58
Passive: Improves your chance to get a critical strike by 1%.

Dal'Rend's Arms

OFFHAND:
Dal'Rend's Tribal Guardian
Binds when picked up
Off Hand Sword
100 Armor
52 - 97 Damage Speed 1.80
(41.4 damage per second)
Requires Level 58
Passive: Increased Defense +7.

Dal'Rend's Arms

Again, with +15 Agility Enchants, This combo is insane giving me 110 RAP and 1% Crit. This set is generally out of reach of most Hunters simply due to the rarity of the main hand drop. Yes, get your Hunters this set if you can, but I wouldnt hold my breath.

Thats about it for now. PEACE!

Alk says there's a way to point a domain name at a subdirectory of another domain. For example:

www.abc.com
points to

so that
www.xyz.com/folder
is the root of
www.abc.com

I told him there's no way to point right at a folder, you'd have to use some kind of redirector from the root of www.abc.com. What's the right answer?

Fumiko and I are moving to a new place this weekend. The majority of the work will be done this Sunday when we rent the truck, but all the additional work that's involved is starting now and I'm sure will continue at least until the end of next week. I love WoW too much for my own good so I'm sure I'll still be on regularly, but the "moving debuff" is a powerful one and carries the following penalties:

50% increased chance to agro wife
Chance to not have internet connection for a few days
Inability to block out enough play time to be a reliable party member.

Yay Thumbs!

Thumbs, Alk, and I were on a great UBRS run last night. I think the makeup was nearly 1/2 Fabled, 1/2 FoH, and a few others. We had so much DPS, many fights ended before the shields wore off the tanks, and that's even in some of the later group-pulls! Needless to say, we tore shit up and had a roaring good time.

Drops were great all night (dragonrider boots, finkle's skinner, blademaster leggings) but nothing anyone from ToC could use until the very end. The General dropped both Draconian Deflector and Breastplate of Valor. Both went to Thumbs uncontested! Grats Thumbs!

Stratholme!!

Here is my proposal. Strat can be 5 man'd (will be tough) or raided. If we can pull 10 guys for this we should be good. The Idea of this run is to make TOC'ers rich.

Thats the Idea plain and simple. Loot strategy.

Upgrades.. Need. (everyone who thinks they will use - and IF someone tells you its an upgrade) take it as well. ** more on this later**
Bind on Equips. We will not be melting gear down this run. ALL MEMBERS WILL GREED if not need on an item. (greens and blues) This is to be taken by yours trully to the AH and sold (prefurably over the weekend for best price).
Ah, but that won't make me much money, and what if i loose out on my rolls..

Well.. Have i got the idea for you. See Sholo Live side has these pesky little orbs that drop which just so happen are a mat for the crusader enchant. WEll.. they just happen to sell in the AH for about 50-80g a pop... O.O HOT SHIT TODD ZWTFBBQ... thats a lot of gold!
Thats what I'm talking about. But heres the catch. This is a TOC event and we all are gona get ritch. Here is my proposal. Say 8 of us show up for the event, cool, 8 go, we get lucky find maybe 3(3 might be a bit high, we found 2 in 40 min once). These are all carried out of sholo by one person. who! wait i know your thinking W.T.F. man, but hear me out. These are carried to the AH and sold for a goodly sum of monies. now BING now we have sold em for about 70 gold a piece if current value is the same. thats 210 gold, now this gets devided evenly though out the people who showed. /8 = 26.25 gold a person, + what ever you sold as a boe. or the upgrade you got. Not bad for a few hours, a few whipes and trying out a really fun instance.

Now I don't want to look at this as farming, because thats not my real intention. Farming has to do with govermnet subsities and chinese or something like that, but i fell asleep in home ec. This is one of the least run instances that I've been in. w

http://www.thottbot.com/?f=i&zones=98&qm=3&iz=1&cols=nktsq link to loot that drops in strat, don't think its side spacific. Lots of goodies here.
I also have the key here, not sure if it matters.

** okay just cause you have a nice set of gear, and something nice drops, but its not really a HOT SHIT upgrade, doesn't mean it could offer you a huge bonus in another way. If someone says, THATS a Nice piece, So-n-so should roll on that. Take their advice. I may not be the king of free bag space. But I have diffrent equipment that i carry to fill diffrent rolls. PVP, Raiding, 5 man, Fire Resist, Shadow Resist, Nature Resist. and more stuff for finner adjustments. Like my swim speed belt.. +15% swim speed. why, cause I need it. lol* anywho don't close your mind of to something that might be an option later on.

Any blacksmiths around?

So I was about to pick up blacksmithing and was trying to decide weather to go for armorsmithing or weaponsmithing and thought I'd first see how many of each are already in the guild. Fill me in, thx.

Fabled Recruiting

Fabled will likely be opening up recruiting again in the near future. If anyone has considered joining a guild that does more high end content and gives an oportunity to play even more than you do now, this might be a good time. Contact me here or in-game and I'll help you through the app process. It's a democratic decision so I can't just get people in, but I'll definately offer my support.

The War is Over

Thumbs, Ivers, Mar, and I stormed Ironforge and Stormwind last night. As some have said before, "We didn't get dressed up for nothin'." Or, as Mar explained in guild chat when someone noticed where we were, "We ain't here for the coins." The battle raged from 2am to 5:30 am and the troops are weary and tired, but all you pansy civilians can rest easy now knowing the war is over and we won.

Evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

Video issues

Anyone else having issues like this? its supposed to be a couple of towers, a bridge and a building

Aliance quest....

For those pansies ... this quest might be .... something. *sigh* Joe, your wife might like it.

Went to the farm, & checked w/ the farmer out front first. He had the special chicken feed for sale (as well as some other goods, and 2 Alliance quests available).

Got 3 bags of feed (2 as backup), and started manually typing.

2 other players, who had just finished it, said MUCH faster/easier to create a macro for /chicken.

Did that; within 30 seconds of spam pushing the macro (just 1 line of the /chicken), the chicken turned green, and a chat bubble popped up.

Message is as above; it IS a 'quest,' so if your log is full, you can't take it.

Mine was; took me a few to decide which I could drop easily to finish this.

Here was a hitch: the same girls told me to do a macro for /cheer, as well, before trying to 'complete' the quest.

Tried that, and started spamming /cheer. Now, at some point, the line came up 'Chicken looks at you expectantly,' but i missed the cue. After that, the chicken just sat there in a sway.

I switched chickens, to do it over again (forgetting to abandon the quest). And guess what? the chickens have a flock mentality. When this one turned 'green' the dialogue window for just completing the quest came up. Started with one; finished with another . . .

There was a line about the chicken looking sick or pregnant, a BIG egg popped up, & chicken ran away. Open it, and get a small egg that now has your prairie chicken non-com pet.

It took me a LOT longer to type this than to actually do it.

They are bind on pick-up, so you will NOT see one in an AH, and I imagine few Horde will be sporting them.

Cartman's Joke

Yes it's South Park, but...
!WARNING! NOT WORK SAFE!

Hell, this ain't even home safe. If you play this within 5 miles of an elementary school, you'll likely end up listed here. The best bet is for you to seal yourself inside a bank vault with headphones.

Once that's all prepared...
I laughed so hard I cried.

A movie of the gates opening, I think. It's pretty crazy. I'll save the spoilers fo rinside the thread as some of you might want to see for yourselves, I know my main could never survive Sithilus so I don't dare peek.

Operation D O double G

Here's step 1 in my new plan: an up to date resume. In the past, I've had very little success (none whatsoever) with blindly sending out resumes and cover letters.

What's wrong with this one? What about it screams "Slacker! Poser! n00b!" to a hiring manager? No reason is too petty; flame away.

Grats Fabled!

For clearing all of MC start to finish in one night.

Please comment on this too.

This is a copy of a post I just made to the Fabled board regarding my job. I'm keen on any input you fine folks may have:

I started at my job 3 months ago, as the replacement for a friend of mine who was leaving the position to go onto bigger and better things. My understanding was that they needed a graphic/web designer who could also do some IT (computer support, etc.) work. I was hired on the spot at $16.50 an hour as a "probationary" rate, meaning that they would boost me to a normal rate after 90 days. My friend was getting at least $20/hr, and he later remarked that he thought they were going to offer me substantially more. While I agreed with him, I was desperate for work at the time, and accepted the offer.

Some personal background:
- I've got about 10 years of IT experience in Windows environments, though I've administered Macs and Linux systems as well. I can build a machine from the ground up, and I can keep it running for years. I haven't gotten into much shell scripting yet, but I can get around a command line pretty well; I am currently learning the joys of SSH.

- I have a Master's degree in Multimedia. My education, while a bit shoddy, covered stuff like photo manipulation, graphic design, computer-based animation, video, and even a bit of 3D. I am pretty decent in most of the major Adobe apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere), and the big Macromedia apps (Flash, and Dreamweaver). I can hand code HTML and CSS, I can read PHP, and could probably write stuff in PHP with a week or two of practice.

- I can do a bit of coding - writing a device driver is a bit out of my league, but I've written thing like small arcade games in Flash. I was the technical lead on my graduate project team, which was sort of a home grown Reactrix system (like those interactive projector dealies they have at fancy malls). I had to teach myself some basic object-oriented programming to do it, too.

Over the past 3 months, the scope of my job has ballooned. I've done:
Catalog design - mostly with the Adobe CS package.
Web design - mostly PHP 4 driving around HTML with CSS; my predecessor wasn't big on documentation, either, so I usually have to reverse engineer anything I have to modify.
Web administration - the company has about 20 sites that I am responsible for running, though they are fairly simple sites.
Marketing material design (postcards, etc.)
Video editing.
Product photography.
Printing.
Copywriting.
Proofing.
Product design.
Yahoo store administration - the company does a little bit of retail business through Yahoo, which involves a proprietary and apparently undocumented scripting language.
All of the IT administration - security, installs, desktop support, server support, etc; if it involves a computer in any way, it's my responsibility.
I've replaced every workstation in the place. I specced out the replacements, too.
Last week, I put in a Samba server based on Redhat 9.
Data recovery.
CRM software - I installed SugarCRM on a Linux server that I built, mostly to handle my own project management. They've also had me looking into packages like ACT and SalesForce.
Invoicing and accounting software - I've spent a few dozen hours looking at business management software.
Email administration - I arranged a 3rd party mail service provider to control our spam and storage problems - tweaking MX records is a little daunting when you've never done it before, and a big chunk of your company's sales rely on working email.
Data entry.
I frequently have to transcribe handwritten emails, and correspond with sales reps, customers, and consultants.
Shipment tracking.
I do a bunch of the work that a receptionist would do, if we had one. I answer phones, take down orders, prepare marketing materials, do customer support, take down messages, and route phone calls.

That's just off the top of my head. Between my project management software and my big whiteboard, I've got at least 5 major ongoing projects, and over 40 simultaneous action items. I'm experienced enough to not get especially stressed out over the workload; none of the things, individually, are particularly challenging.

Back to the story, though: I've been doing all of this at a probationary rate of $16.50/hr and basic benefits for the past 3 months. I brought this up with my boss(es) yesterday, and today, they came back with an offer of $18/hr, thinking that I would be happy to get a small raise.

I think that my friend was grossly underpaid at $20/hr for the number of professional skillsets that he had to juggle, and that was before I knew the extent of his responsibilities. Granted, it's a small company (I'm employee #10), but they seemed pretty happy with me so far - I am frequently complimented on the work I do, whatever it happens to be that hour.

Am I greedy for thinking that I'm more valuable than that? I only came to this job after 4 months of job hunting; this in the SF Bay Area, too. Has anyone put up with anything similar? Were you able to break out of it? What would you do in a similar situation?

Please Comment

If you have any input...

When Brian decides he will go on The Bachelorette reality show:

Brian:
...I could use a vacation.

Stewie:
Oh yes cause you have such a heavy workload around here.
Mmm...
(his voice gets higher)
How you uh, how you comin' on that novel you're workin on? Huh?
Gotta a big, uh, big stack of papers there?
Gotta, gotta nice litte, nice little story you're working on there?
Your big novel you've been working on for 3 years? Huh?
Gotta, gotta compelling protaganist? Yeah?
Gotta, gotta, gotta obstacle for him to overcome? Huh?
Gotta story brewin there?
Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh?
(voice getting higher pitched)
Yeah, talking about that 3 years ago. Yeah?
Been working on that the whole time?
Nice little ahh narrative?
A beginning, middle, and end?
Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? Yeah?
At the end your ah main character is ah richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah?
Yeah? You got that...
(voice returns to normal)
No, no, you deserve some time off.

After Brian falls in love with the Bachelorette only to find it was all made-for-tv:

Stewie:
(his voice getting progressively higher)
Oh I know it hurts now Brian, but look at the bright side:
you have some new material for that novel you've been writing.
You know...the novel you've been workin' on?
You know the the one, uh, you've been workin on for 3 years?
You know the novel.
Got somethin' new to write about now. You know?
Maybe a, maybe a main character gets into a relationship and suffers a little heartbreak?
Somethin' like what... what you've just been through?
Draw from real life experience?
Little, little heartbreak? You know?
Work it into the story?
Make the characters a little more three dimensional?
Little, uh, richer experience for the reader?
Make those second hundred pages really keep the reader guessing what's going to happen?
Some twists and turns?
A little epilogue?
Everybody learns that the hero's journey isn't always a happy one?
(voice returns to normal)
Oh, I look forward to reading it.
