stolen: "Why Ranged Atk Power > Crit% (Hunter's only)"

I'm ripping off Bondok, an officer of the fabled and he is ripping off someone else.

At one point in the game I was solely convinced that +crit% was the damage factor for Hunter's (PvE of course). Over and over I've played with my talents and weapons even when I was in all blue. Last year right when I joined the Fabled I met a Hunter by the name of Khrash. (vox immortalis). Even before Khrash gained a lot of his Epics this dude did a fuck ton of damage, overtime and consistantly.

In my talks with him he has convinced me, in recent days within the Fabled, and since I've changed my build to my roll as a Puller and a High DPS output Hunter.

As a favor he wrote up his thoughts and why Hunter's are #1 in DPS hands down in PvE. And why Ranged Attack Power (agility, atk power bonuses) is greater then Crit bonuses on weapons.

Hunter's this is not a you should do this Post, but to be the best in our roll as DPS and mass damage overtime, this Post is a good read. Also when we start talks about ATK Power,Agil and +bonuses on weapons that we should be allowed to bid on. This post should be the firepower we need to convince others what our roll is and how to do it well with the right equipment.

The Hunters primary attribute is Ranged Attack Power and +Hit.

+Crit is always nice to have, but certainly nothing you would want to keep if you can dramatically increase your RAP by losing it.

You will hear arguements from other hunters such as "But 1% crit is equal to 52.6 Agility!" but its NOT. Yes, in the sense that 52.6 agility does equal 1% crit in turn it does not equal 105.2 Ranged Attack Power.

14 RAP = 1 DPS
105.2 RAP = 7.5 DPS

This far outweighs +Crit.

Your average hit is increased the higher your Ranged Attack Power goes. Your sweet spot, and what should be sought after, is 1300 RAP minimum. To go along with this you should seek +9 HIT, but again, do not give up RAP to obtain +Hit.

RAP > HIT > CRIT.

Look at it that way.

As to what bow/gun/xbow to use. This can be argued, but let me put this on the table. What you see for "DPS" for the weapon does NOT apply to a Hunter. You must look at minimum and maximum damage and compare this to the Speed of the weapon.

You are looking for high low damage, high high damage and slow speed.

Example:

Crossbow of Imminent Doom
Binds when picked up
Range Crossbow
103 - 155 Damage Speed 3.10
(41.6 damage per second)
+7 Agility
+5 Stamina
+5 Strength
Requires Level 60
Passive: Improves your chance to hit by 1%.

Dropped by: Ossirian the Unscarred 5.65%

The above Xbow is the second best droppable ranged weapon in the game for a Hunter. This comes from the AQ20 instance off the final boss. Its drop rate is fair and not overly rare. Note the low damage versus the high damage. This xbow is SICK. With 1300+ RAP and +6 HIT your average Multi-shot and Aimed Shot will be incredible.

Also keep in mind that in most instances a good Hunters 'white damage' is only 43% of his/her total damage. The other 57% come from Aimed Shot/Multi-Shot/Arcane Shot/Serpent Sting.

Your choice of Ranged is extremely important, but you must choose based on your build and what you feel is important.

For myself I am a Marksman Build 100%. 5/34/12. This build is optimal Marksman Build.

I prefer RAP over everything and I choose to obtain through Agility/+Attack Power Items.

I prefer slow speed ranged, high low damage, high high damage ranged.

As to melee weapons. Yes, people will bitch moan and complain about our choices, but they must see them from our perspective. Hunters generally do not care about DPS on melee weapons as our melee is both weak and simply ineffective. We look at the stats of the weapon.

Does it have +agility?
Does it have +hit?
Does it have +crit?
Does it have +attack power?

If an item has these stats on them we look quite favorably on them and depending on how much of each it has will apply how much weight we give to them as we wish to max out our RAP.

Keep in mind that Hunters obtain 2:1 Agility ratio on RAP. Agility is incredibly important to a Hunter.

If a Weapon has 2 or more of the above stats on them we generally wish to obtain that item as it will help us in our goal of maxing our RAP.

The best Combo of weapons for a Hunter who is a RAP Whore is the following:

MAIN HAND:
Fang of the Faceless
Binds when picked up
Unique
One-Hand Dagger
66 - 123 Damage Speed 1.90
(49.7 damage per second)
Requires Level 60
Passive: Improves your chance to get a critical strike by 1%.
Passive: +28 Attack Power.

OFF HAND:
Warblade of the Hakkari
Binds when picked up
Unique
Off Hand Sword
57 - 106 Damage Speed 1.70
(47.9 damage per second)
Requires Level 60
Passive: +40 Attack Power.
"The seething flames of hatred."

The Twin Blades of Hakkari

OMG! Hear the Rogues cry! Now listen to me for a second. Yes, I understand that obtain a great benefit from these 2 weapons or at least one of them, but Hunters also obtain a great benefit from them.

Hunters obtain, with +15 Agility Enchants, 128 Ranged Attack Power and 1% Crit.

This combo of weapons is by FAR the best weapon combo a Hunter can obtain bar none (besides perhaps some insane BWL weapons which I have not researched as it is out my reach at this time).

Another great combo is:

MAIN HAND:
Brutality Blade
Binds when picked up
Unique
One-Hand Sword
90 - 168 Damage Speed 2.50
(51.6 damage per second)
+9 Strength
+9 Agility
Requires Level 60
Passive: Improves your chance to get a critical strike by 1%.

OFFHAND:
Core Hound Tooth
Binds when picked up
Unique
One-Hand Dagger
57 - 107 Damage Speed 1.60
(51.2 damage per second)
+9 Stamina
Requires Level 60
Passive: Improves your chance to get a critical strike by 1%.
Passive: +20 Attack Power.

With this combo we obtain, with +15 Agility Enchants, 98 RAP and 2% Crit. This also is an insane combo of weapons for Hunters.

Obviously there are other combo's out there, but I am pointing out 2 which stand out in my mind.

Personally I use, for now, the Dal'Rend's Set.

MAIN HAND:
Dal'Rend's Sacred Charge
Binds when picked up
Main Hand Sword
81 - 151 Damage Speed 2.80
(41.4 damage per second)
+4 Strength
Requires Level 58
Passive: Improves your chance to get a critical strike by 1%.

Dal'Rend's Arms

OFFHAND:
Dal'Rend's Tribal Guardian
Binds when picked up
Off Hand Sword
100 Armor
52 - 97 Damage Speed 1.80
(41.4 damage per second)
Requires Level 58
Passive: Increased Defense +7.

Dal'Rend's Arms

Again, with +15 Agility Enchants, This combo is insane giving me 110 RAP and 1% Crit. This set is generally out of reach of most Hunters simply due to the rarity of the main hand drop. Yes, get your Hunters this set if you can, but I wouldnt hold my breath.

Thats about it for now. PEACE!

I wanted to post this as something to think about. The thing that amazes me is that these hunters only use their pets as a sacrifical piece of meat when pulling tough mobs. They do not use em for dps or anything else in Raids. They still hit top 5 of our DPS lists for boss fights or for full runs.

2 things. One if spec'd right and geared they can unload huge amounts of agro and 'FD' Feign Death. Handy way of clearing agro.

We have a mage who has to constantly hold back on the max amount of damage he can do. Only fight he can really open up in is Ragnaros or during phase 2 of onyxia.

When they say "ranged attack power" any thing that says "equip: +## to Attack Power" I'm almost positive it adds to both melee and Ranged. ( i need to double check this).

Melee weapons that add AGI/attack power/+crit/+hit are all nice for a hunter.

All this info makes me want to play one.

Just some thoughts.

Nice read, I've been wondering about the normal attack power to ranged attack power conversion thing myself. As a fury warior I too am all about the sustained high damage rather than the big burst numbers that arms warriors produce, ths is kinda the same thing. Hunters do have it easy dps wise with that feign death. Now there is also that AQ 20 trinket though, it reduces the threat of your attacks by 90% for like 15 seconds. Perfect for all those dps classes without aggro dumps. The only thing I didn't like about the article was the part where they said they were the best dps, us fury warriors aren't limited by mana, rage is infinite :P

one of the things i supply to the guild for raids are enchants. the ones that are temporay on weapons.
there are 2 top level ones, brilliant mana oil and brilliant wizard oil
mana oil ads +12 mana every 5 seconds, wizard oil adds +1% to crit and +32 spell damage.

I Bondok was able to get 1 mana oils on each of his weapons last night.. so thats equil to 2 mana spring totems off a shamie

Nice. Does that mean caster classes with all that junk won't run out during a fight? Also I read a totems vs blessings thing the other day and was quite suprised, totems seem to not be getting so much love, but that probably will change when Shammies finally get their review. Mainly the problems were in AQ though, a lot of the fights require you to not use any of them.

so "+ attack power" gear gives you good RAP?

Maraco said...

I have yet to see gear that says "equip: + ranged attack"

there are two types of items. ones that have white text that say + attack power and green ones that say equip: + attack power... the ones that are green will break the 300/300 skill/ability cap. the ones in white will not.
