Recap: - FoH and other raiding guilds have incentive to see more content, i.e. they want to open the gates to AQ. - In order to open the gates, FoH (and other raiding guilds) needs to encourage people to farm mats and do the "war effort" turn ins
By what mechanism do they encourage people to farm? - FoH can appeal to the good nature of people. "Hey fellas we're all in this together, why don't you spend your free time farming and help with the war effort!" - Similarly, FoH could underscore the benefits of the gates opening to all folks and down play the benefits that only a few guilds will see. - They could do all the farming themselves and be content that the 'war effort' will take longer. - They could pay more for mats in the AH thus encouraging folks to farm and sell in the AH. - They could outsource farming to China/India where labor is cheaper.
From the looks of it, FoH has done none of these (except, apparently begrudgingly pay higher prices in the AH). Instead, FoH has decided to make enemies of the folks that are actually farming (i.e. the folks that are selling in the AH) and in the process have intimidated people away from helping in the war effort. Weird.
Actually, they've been running a collection campaign for the past few weeks. Anyone submitting resources is granted lottery tickets; they've offered a fairly compelling set of prizes to the winners. They've even been collecting resources for the Alliance. The price increase in the AH is, of course, a direct consequence of the increased demand.
Of course, that can't deter a couple of idiots in their organization from complaining. I think you will find the same mentality in any community with over 5 members.
My AH alt, the listed Zulkani, Would like to take this time to personally thank all the elite raiding guild folks for the gold nessacary for my first raptor. I love you too guys. Supply and demand FTW. Now we'll see if they complain about profiteering when FoH sells the new enchants for 800+G.
