I'm a newbie trapped in a lvl 60 char

so i know i've used up all my noob question for this week but i'm dying to know.. what is proc? I know it's how often a weapon kicks in its special ability.. but is it an abbreviation or a shortened word?

(WA UPDATE: moved up to allow for more hilarity to ensue...)

I heard just recently that "proc" comes from waaaay back in the early days when it used to mean "process."

Yah, ok I'm still scratching my head, too.

A completely unsatisfactory explaination...

"Proc - Activate. Example: A weapon with a special effect will "proc" every so often. (Process)"

err?

"proc: (based on "procedure") a special effect (usually spell) that occurs under certain conditions. A sword may have a fire proc - a fireball spell that occurs randomly. Armor may have a reactive proc - a spell that has a chance of being cast when that piece of armor is struck by an enemy"

which is it 'process' or 'procedure'?

I like procedure because that may be alluding to a programming term... As in, "hitting something with this sword randomly triggers a fireball spell procedure code".
