I heard just recently that "proc" comes from waaaay back in the early days when it used to mean "process."
Yah, ok I'm still scratching my head, too.
ahh, ok. i thought it was something like process rate on chance
A completely unsatisfactory explaination...
"Proc - Activate. Example: A weapon with a special effect will "proc" every so often. (Process)"
err?
"proc: (based on "procedure") a special effect (usually spell) that occurs under certain conditions. A sword may have a fire proc - a fireball spell that occurs randomly. Armor may have a reactive proc - a spell that has a chance of being cast when that piece of armor is struck by an enemy"
which is it 'process' or 'procedure'?
I like procedure because that may be alluding to a programming term... As in, "hitting something with this sword randomly triggers a fireball spell procedure code".
Hilarity. Yes.
